Julieth Kabyemela, Assistant Director of Cultural Heritage and National Development and Acting Director from the Ministry of Information, has stated that Tanzania played a significant role in the liberation struggles of Southern Africa by providing military training and strong diplomatic support to various liberation movements.
Speaking during the commemoration of SADC Day held on March 23, 2026, at the African Liberation Heritage Centre, Dr. Kabyemela said the day serves as an important moment to remember the victory of liberation movements across Southern African countries.
She explained that the commemoration is part of implementing resolutions of the Southern African Development Community, with African nations marking the day through various activities aimed at preserving and honoring liberation history.
Dr. Kabyemela emphasized that while political liberation was a major milestone, there is still a pressing need to advance economic transformation to achieve true independence across the African continent.
She further called upon the youth to take responsibility as custodians of this legacy, ensuring that the stories of liberation are preserved and used to inspire patriotism and the vision of the Africa we aspire to build.
“It is our duty to preserve this history, learn from our founding leaders, and move forward together towards economic transformation,” she stressed.
She concluded by emphasizing African unity, noting that the legacy of liberation is a valuable heritage that must be protected and advanced through action, urging young people to take the lead in building a self-reliant, united, and prosperous Africa for present and future generations.
